While on a hike, from the glorious views of the nature around you to the fresh, crisp air blowing directly into your lungs, you can’t help but feel like you’re on top of the world, and sometimes you are literally on top of the world. Growing up in Northern Michigan, I’ve been lucky enough to experience the beauty of several trails and journey through several forests, beaches, and cliffs.
I’ve even traveled to Colorado and trekked the infamous Flatirons of Boulder as well as the glorious Maxwell Ridge of Fort Collins. And experienced the countless peaks of several mountains in Arizona, uncountable nature paths in the sunny state of Florida, not to forget King Canyon Park and Sequoias of California have truly been a blessing.
It is amazing how rewarding a great day on the trail can be. From relaxing your mind, to creating many health benefits to your body, the benefits of hiking are of many.
There is nothing like the feeling of knowing you’re doing something good for your overall health. I’ve hiked both alone and with pals and let me tell you, when you’re at the top of a peak gazing at the sunset over the mountains and lakes, there’s nothing better than someone to admire the view with.

Compression stockings are essentially close-fitting socks that gently keep your feet and lower legs tight by exerting a constant and graduated pressure on them. Sound uncomfortable? You’ll have to rethink yourself – once you have tried them, your legs will feel light as a feather.
But why would someone ever want to squeeze their legs into compression stockings?
Surprisingly, compression socks have many benefits linked to both health and sports performance. By applying a moderate to firm pressure to your lower limbs, compression stockings favor a better blood circulation, thus preventing your legs from getting tired, swollen and achy. The same compression also helps you to achieve faster muscle recovery in case of injuries or surgeries, thus boosting your performance to a new level.
How do compression socks do this?
If you want to go into technical details, compression stockings act upon the basic venous blood circulation. Veins pumping de-oxygenated blood back to the heart could be hindered by any alterations, causing the blood vessels’ to expand. This leads to the subsequent weakening of the veins’ valves. Being unable to return to the heart, the venous blood will begin to accumulate in the legs, causing unpleasant swelling. By exerting external pressure on the lower legs, compression socks will reduce the diameter of your veins and place the valves back to their original position, thus enabling the venous blood to return to the heart.

You are a passionate and very successful trail runner – how did your passion for ultra-running evolve?
Since I come from the classic alpinism and hiking sports, I have been used to going on long tours in the mountains since my youth. This way I have learned to spend a lot of time outdoors and take in the special atmosphere in the nature. Accordingly, long runs in the mountains are very similar to a quick mountain hike for me.
What does your daily training schedule look like in preparation for your big runs?
Although I train according to a training plan, this still gives me enough flexibility to spontaneously do something else or just take advantage of good weather. In addition, variety is very important to me. Exercising on different pulse levels, not neglecting strength training, as well as incorporating other sports, such as race cycling and cross-country skiing, are all key factors in my training.
What motivates you to train so hard?
Honestly, I’m not sure. I just like to feel my body, especially in intense phases, when the pulse is extremely high, or the muscles are under high stress. Looking into challenges and coping with them as well as possible motivates me tremendously and gives me a lot of self-confidence and balance for my everyday life.
One big event you are currently training for are the Trailrun World Championships in Spain this year. Are there any other running events you will participate in?
Definitely – it is my plan to compete on the marathon distance in March or April, but have not decided on any specific events yet.
What has been your favorite running trail so far?
That’s the beauty of my sport – I really like running everywhere. Of course, I love running in the mountains and always like to gain some altitude, but completely flat parts of a trail are also appealing to me. I already have a favorite mountain, the so-called Höfats, a uniquely beautiful mountain high above my hometown Oberstdorf.
We heard of your recent journey storming the summit of Mont Blanc. Are there any plans for new adventures?
That’s right, at the end of September I had a dream come true and “jumped” onto the Mont Blanc. I still have so many plans for new adventures. These projects are a big motivation for me, in addition to the competitions, to continue to train and stay fit. There are still many mountains and peaks out there that only wait for me and want to be discovered – you will certainly hear from some more of my adventures in the future.
Are you currently practicing any sports other than running or have you previously participated in any other sports?
I’m a typical German boy and played at my local football club, FC Oberstdorf for a few years. In addition, I think badminton is a great sport. Unfortunately, I find too little time to practice it.
As a balance to running, I have discovered race cycling and in the winter I also try to get back on my cross-country skis. Otherwise, I just love to spend time outdoors, like relaxing in the mountains with friends or family while hiking or just going for a walk.
What do you do when you are not running?
Look what the fridge offers and eat chocolate 😉. In addition, I like to meet people who are important to me for a nice cup of coffee …
You often run in our DANISH ENDURANCE stockings. Which is your favorite product and why?
That’s right and I do not just run in your socks but also wear them in my free time and to regenerate. That’s why I do not have a favorite product. I just like your entire offer, which completely covers my claims as an athlete. But if I want to highlight a product, then it is certainly the compression socks, which have already accompanied me reliably on some ultraruns.
As a competitive athlete, you certainly have to be very disciplined. What is your biggest vice?
Haha, definitely chocolate. Here I have to be careful again and again that I do not fall into a “food craze”. Then, instead of altitude, I collect calories. The good thing is, that as an endurance athlete you easily burn off those calories again!
Any tips for our DANISH ENDURANCE community on how to stay fit and healthy as an athlete?
Here, I think the principle that holds for most things in life applies: If something drives you and motivates you, everything in life is possible. My experience with sports has proven this to me in the past and it is confirmed almost every day. When you are motivated, discipline and even renunciation in certain situations come automatically. I have learned not to strain myself too much, and sometimes just to enjoy life and kick over the traces. Listen to your body and occasionally give your mind some space, then the fun will always be guaranteed and your soul will thank you. #moremilesmorecalories
Hi, my name is Stéphanie Versteeg and I am a travel writer from the Netherlands. I’m the adventurous kind of travel girl and for my blog expeditieaardbol.nl I get to travel the world on a regular basis.
For the last 10 years, I have conquered our beautiful planet with flip flops and sneakers. I climbed mountains in Austria and Laos, and did challenging hiking trips in the jungle of Indonesia. As you can imagine, that did not go without a little struggle: I injured several body parts when falling from slippery rocks and always prayed for a good outcome when climbing to a new viewpoint. Despite some serious bruises I always survived, but it wasn’t really convenient to do these kind of hikes on worn-out sneakers or flip flops.
A few months ago, I finally stocked up on some more professional travel gear. I exchanged the flip flops for some decent hiking boots and paired it with the merino wool hiking socks by Danish Endurance. I took them to Sicily for a short trip and – this will not come as a surprise – what a relief! Why didn’t I think of this earlier? The hiking boots are perfect for hikes and adventures on rugged ground, but especially the socks are a life saver: I haven’t stopped wearing them ever since.
The Danish Endurance hiking socks are made with 33% merino wool and have a padded area to absorb shocks. The socks are quite thick and keep your feet warm, but at the same time they dry quickly after washing them, which is extremely convenient when on the road. They help prevent blisters and injuries, but I also use them as my everyday socks. I am even wearing them right now, just at home, writing stories at the kitchen table.
After all these years of travelling, with Danish Endurance I’m finally prepared to do some more serious hiking. I’m looking forward to taking my new gear on a stroll somewhere remote, and I already have a destination in mind. This year I’m planning to go to Madagscar, and I can’t wait to wear my socks for a confident hike or climb in one of its national parks.

When did you start to run and who and what motivates you?
I started doing track and field/running when I was 3 years old. My motivation comes from standing on the track at Championships like WC, EC and the Olympics where the atmosphere is outstanding.
Have you ever practiced any other sports?
When I was little I did handball, swimming, badminton and dancing.
What would a typical day look like for you?
On a typical day I wake up at 6.30 am, eat breakfast and drink coffee. Then I have my first morning session at 9 am. My first session is done around 11.00 am and then I have lunch around 12.30 pm
Then I sometimes have physio and massage.
School/studying for 4 hours and then I have my evening session from 5.00 pm to 7.30 pm.
Then I go home, relax and have dinner around 9PM and straight to bed afterwards.
How often and how do you usually train?
I train 6 days a week. Two sessions Tuesday and Thursday. My trainings sessions are about sprinting, distance running, core, strength and technical workouts.
What do you do to relax after an exhausting day of training?
My days off I usually go to my favorite cafe, relax and read. Sometimes I also go to the sauna.
We know that you are training for the European Athletics Championships which take place in Berlin next year. What are your expectations for this?
Getting to the final is my main goal. But first, I need to qualify.
You love to travel – what is your favorite destination? …and where would you like to go next if you could choose any place?
My favorite place is very difficult to pick. But probably Bali or the Philippines. I would love to visit Sri Lanka, Kenya or Hawaii.
What is your favorite food?
Dishes that contain fish. 😊
What is your favorite Danish Endurance product and why?

How will you celebrate Christmas this year?
I will celebrate Christmas in South Africa this year.
